Warren Mayor James R. Fouts is to attend the Veteran’s Home “Outdoors” ceremony.

John Ciecko, Jr., was born in a concentration camp in Attenkirchen, Germany, in 1943.  He and his parents were liberated in 1945 by the US Army.  After moving to the US, he and his parents settled in Michigan, where after high school he enlisted in the Marines.  John Ciecko, Jr., served as a Force Recon sniper and was the recipient of five Purple Heart medals for wounds sustained during combat.  On his final tour of duty Ciecko was hit by enemy shrapnel and was severely wounded, resulting in the loss of both of his legs.

John Ciecko Jr., will have his home’s outdoor area completely redone in order to improve his quality of life and enhance the grounds, compliments of “The Home Depot.”

Warren Mayor James Fouts will attend the start of the facelift beginning Monday, July 6.

Ciecko served as the executive committeeman, judge advocate, paralegal and retired national service of the Military Order of Purple Heart, Chapter 1818.

Home Depot stores in Warren, Sterling Heights and Utica are participating on this project that is funded by a $4,600 Home Depot grant from the “Home Depot Foundation Community Impact Grants Program”.

Mayor James Fouts stated that Ciecko is deserving of the grant due to the “the hard work he has done for veterans. “

A Warren Resident, Ciecko was the driving force behind Warren becoming the first city in Michigan to be designated “A Purple Heart City,” said Mayor Jim Fouts in a statement.
